Ask the Institute Women and Children’s Health is an advisory service providing hands-on, specialist, women and children’s health-focused input to all areas of research and evaluation.
Ask the Institute accepts queries from anyone across KHP partner organisations – plus Primary Care Networks, local authorities, and public health teams in south east London. It provides a range of services - from supporting colleagues in converting an idea into a robust research question to carrying out monitoring and evaluation for clinical services and interventions.
The service can provide ongoing support and advice to clinicians, policymakers, programme, and operational managers. Any query, small or large, is welcome.
Over the past year, the service has received more than 40 queries from organisations across south east London.
Projects supported by Ask the Institute have included:
- Evaluating the Women’s Health Network, a group-based social support pilot programme run by social prescribing link workers in Brook and Dale Primary Care Network;
- Reviewing the National Child Measurement Programme in Southwark to understand whether data sharing with General Practice can increase uptake of child weight management services;
- Coordinated delivery of the Children's Hospital Research Project at Evelina London. This qualitative research project aimed to understand the barriers to accessing healthcare and why families don’t attend appointments. The research was commissioned by the Children's Hospital Alliance, and the findings will support the national elective recovery plan for paediatrics.
How to submit a query to Ask the Institute
The service will acknowledge receipt of an initial enquiry and will contact you to arrange a follow-up conversation to clarify your research or evaluation needs, timescales and available funding within five working days.

Based on the follow-up conversation the service will develop a research brief, which includes information on the background to your enquiry, aims and objectives of your enquiry, and what the researchers will provide.
Once you are happy with this research brief, a research proposal with clear deliverables and, if appropriate, funding expectations are agreed.
Once all are happy with the plan, the research work begins.
