We are creating a transformative life sciences ecosystem in south central London dedicated to innovation, creative partnerships and improving health and wealth for our local and global communities.
Over two years ago, work began by founders King’s Health Partners, Lambeth and Southwark local authorities and the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation to develop a new life sciences innovation district for London. SC1 London Life Sciences Innovation District is a place-based initiative which will aim to support inclusive growth of the life sciences economy.
The founders established SC1 to harness the opportunities offered in our existing life sciences ecosystem, which contains rich expertise in biopharmaceuticals, medical technology, genomics, diagnostics, digital health and mind and body care. The breadth of our collaboration across partners in south London, coupled with our strength in mental and physical health mean we are uniquely placed to lead innovation in clinical practice and improve health outcomes.
A key advantage of our geography compared with other innovation districts around the world, is our diverse population, which means that the innovations developed here will often have a meaningful impact on diverse populations globally. Crucially, our determination to serve our diverse local communities will also enable us to nurture inclusive growth and reduce health and wealth inequities across our population.
Significant investment plans across Lambeth and Southwark are already in train, which has catapulted SC1 from concept into a reality that is gathering interest. These investment plans have the potential to deliver over two million square feet of commercial and community space. Beyond the clinical estates, a huge amount of development potential exists in South Bank, London Bridge and Denmark Hill and our footprint includes the rich environments around some of London’s most vibrant cultural and creative districts in Peckham, Brixton and Canada Water.
With increasing developer interest in the life sciences sector, we will be holding an initial soft launch of SC1 at an in-person event at County Hall in London on the 7th June. The event will share our evolving plans and present the opportunities that are developing to offer investors and developers. Building on and learning from this initial soft launch, SC1 intends to hold several follow up events more uniquely targeted to other stakeholder groups and specific opportunities.
