Clinical Senior Lecturer, Dr Sabrina Bajwah, explains why she is determined to focus on research alongside her clinical work.
What is your role?
I work as a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care at King’s College London and as an Honorary Palliative Medicine Consultant at King’s College Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trusts.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy improving the lives of individual patients and families in my everyday clinical work. However, stepping away from that clinical work and working on research to develop and evaluate health care interventions means that my research can and has, made a difference to thousands of patients nationally and internationally.
I am particularly interested in reducing inequality, and improving equity at the end of life and this is the area of my work that I am most passionate about, and most enjoy. I work 50% clinically and 50% academically. My clinical work makes me a better academic and my academic work, makes me a better clinician.
What inspired you to get into this work?
I’ve always been someone who needs a challenge. I continue to learn everyday being an academic and I am constantly expanding my skill set and my knowledge. It’s an environment that is challenging intellectually, and I am constantly growing. I think being able to make a tangible large-scale difference in this way for some of the most vulnerable in society is what inspires and drives me.
What are the benefits of working in partnership?
Whilst working across organisations has its challenges, working in partnership is great to harness a wide range of perspectives and skills.
What would be your one career top tip to staff and students?
Find something that ignites your passion, something that you truly believe in. The rest will fall into place.
Earlier this year Dr Sabrina Bajwah travelled across the UK, leading on the production of an education film that would show how equity in palliative care can improve experiences for patients and their families. To watch the film and find out more about the project visit the King’s College London website.
