The new KHPeople series shares work highlights, motivations, and career top tips from staff and students across the partnership. Our first one features Prof Rose, co-founder of the Life lines initiative and recently awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours.

What is your role within the KHP partnership? 

I am one of the co-founders of Life Lines which is one of KHP’s programmes developed during the pandemic to support virtual family visiting in intensive care across the UK and now focuses on digital innovations to support patients and families in intensive care and recovery from critical illness. 

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Working with innovative and creative people who are passionate about improving the outcomes and experience of intensive care patients and their families.

What inspired you to get into this work?

Life Lines was inspired by a desire to address the urgent need to relieve the suffering of patients and families separated due to the pandemic enforced visiting restrictions.

What are the benefits of working in partnership?

Working in partnership with KHP facilitates a broader reach to clinicians, researchers and academics as well as members of the public to foster greater dissemination and impact of our work.

What would be your career top tip?

Find the people you enjoy working with, avoid procrastination, and believe in the impossible!

*Prof Louise Rose MBE is Professor of Critical Care Nursing and Head of Research Division (Applied Technologies in Clinical Care), Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care, King’s College London. And she is an Honorary Professor, Critical Care Directorate and Lane Fox Respiratory Unit, at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

Life Lines provides a secure virtual visiting solution so that families can connect with loved ones who are being treated in intensive care units (ICU). Life Lines was created as a rapid response initiative to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team is now continuing the Life Lines mission to develop, research, and evaluate digital solutions to support patients, families and clinical teams throughout the intensive care journey.
