After 46 years of service to the NHS and academia, in October 2019 Prof John Moxham will be retiring from his role as Director of Value Based Healthcare at King’s Health Partners.
John originally joined King’s Health Partners at its inception in 2009 as Director of Clinical Strategy. Prior to that was Medical Director of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust from 2003 to 2009 and was a Professor of Respiratory Medicine at King’s College London.
As an enthusiastic ‘Camberwellian’, John has served our communities tirelessly throughout his career as a clinical academic. His drive to promote value and improve outcomes has shaped the way we deliver services to our local population, and his work has reached far beyond our organisation having national and international impact.
Under John’s guidance, King’s Health Partners has defined models of integrated clinical academic working that incorporate clinical practice, research and education through our Clinical Academic Groups, and set the bar for value driven approaches to healthcare through his work on capturing outcomes to deliver a culture of improvement. His work now reaches across our local health system and is envied by many of our global partners.
Value based healthcare did not start as a key priority of King’s Health Partners but, owing to John’s passion, dedication and efforts it is now one of our core themes and a truly unique aspect of our Academic Health Sciences Centre. More recently, John’s ambitions for our health system to focus on screening, diagnosis and treatment, through the Vital 5 programme, is sparking national interest and will be a key part of our future plans.
As you will be aware, John has a longstanding interest in public health, particularly in smoking reduction and for many years was the Chairman of Action on Smoking and Health. His work in this field is a model for how clinical academic approaches, with determination and belief, can have a profound influence on local communities, national policy and an impact that is felt globally.
With busy family life and an energetic role with his many grandchildren, John now feels that October 2019 will be the right time to step away from his professional roles.
Prof Sir Robert Lechler, Executive Director of King’s Health Partners, said:
Few individuals can demonstrate the span of clinical academic leadership that John has. His impact and the transformations of healthcare and policy he has inspired are significant. He will be a tough act to follow and I personally will miss the passion and commitment he has brought to King’s Health Partners.
Dr Clive Kay, Chief Executive of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said:
On behalf of everyone at King’s College Hospital, I would like to thank John for the incredible contribution he has made to public health during his career. Both our local community and the population as a whole have greatly benefitted not only from John’s tireless commitment to improving patient outcomes and prevention, reducing health inequality but also from his academic work. He has inspired generations of colleagues across the NHS and we wish him a wonderful retirement.
Professor Julia Wendon, Executive Medical Director at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said:
As well as being an exceptional clinician, teacher and researcher, John is more than anything a man of immense wisdom and kindness. He always made himself available for his staff, patients and their families. Over and above his numerous achievements in the field of medicine, education and research, I will also fondly remember John for his signature scarves and love of his family. We all wish him the very best in his retirement.
In the next few weeks, King’s Health Partners will look to appoint three key individuals to provide sessional time to drive forward the considerable portfolio of work established by John.
