BD_Psychiatry_CAG_overview.jpgOur Clinical Academic Group (CAG) is a European leader in research and services for people with neurodevelopmental disorders affecting social behaviour, and/or offending.

We assess and treat complex, challenging and difficult-to-manage behaviours. We bring together specialist psychiatric services for adults with mental illness and a history of serious offending, for people in the prison system, and for those with neurodevelopmental disorders including intellectual disabilities, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Our aim is to diagnose and treat people early so that we can prevent disorders developing, assess and manage risks, and promote recovery and social inclusion.

Our work is very varied, but has a central focus on diagnosing and treating abnormal social behaviours. The CAG structure enables us to embed a culture of research and education excellence in all that we do, so that we can provide the best possible care to people that are often in vulnerable and high risk circumstances.

Education and training

The CAG delivers education and training to a range of people from undergraduate and postgraduate students to community support workers and other practitioners.

Our education and training brings together clinical and academic expertise from the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN). We aim to deliver excellent evidence-based programmes that support a competent and modernised workforce in delivering high quality mental health care.

Key achievements in education include:

  • Recruitment of 15 CAG-wide education and training champions to support training in the CAG
  • The Adult ADHD Service was awarded a grant from the Maudsley Charity to develop a service user educational app.

Research

We have leading researchers in autism spectrum disorders, ADHD and psychopathy. Our research focuses on secure service and prison environments as well as conventional clinical settings.

We bring research from ‘bench to bedside’ through our leadership of world leading translational research centres based at the IoPPN, in the Department of Forensic & Neurodevelopmental Sciences.
