The Dental Clinical Academic Group (CAG) educates the breadth of oral health care professionals in the UK, and delivers research that changes clinical practice, informs policy, and creates new products to improve oral health.
As an integral part of the provision of total care for patients, we are the major provider of specialist oral and dental services to an extremely large and diverse population in the south east of England.
Through our joint multidisciplinary clinics with medical specialties, the CAG provides services for people with complex and rare conditions. The services we provide in partnership with other disciplines include: oncology with head and neck cancer; Behcet’s syndrome with ophthalmology; Sjogren’s syndrome with rheumatology; orofacial granulomatosis with gastroenterology/renal; cognitive behavioural therapy with psychiatry; and dental treatment for people with rare and debilitating dermatological disorders such as epidermolysis bullosa.
King’s College London has maintained its standing as the top dental school in Europe, and is ninth in the world in the 2023 QS World University Rankings.
We educate the entire dental and oral healthcare team, from dental nurses through to highly trained dental specialists including 20% of the dentists in England.
We are the only centre in the UK to provide training in all specialist areas for theoral and dental workforce of the future.
Other key education achievements include:
- successful visitation of Orthodontic Auxiliary programme, as part of accreditation process, by General Dental Council (GDC);
- new e-learning course on ‘managing dental fear’ launched;
- new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses for staff held at lunchtimes have received excellent feedback and helped staff acquire CPD credits without the need for multiple days away from the workplace.
As well as world leading undergraduate and postgraduate dental training, we provide a nationally recognised dental nurse training programme at King’s College Hospital and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trusts.
Our research is internationally recognised for its excellence. Our publications are highly cited and textbooks written by our staff are used throughout the world.
The breadth of our research is extensive, including understanding how structures of the head and neck develop, and what causes both natural development and deformities; understanding how saliva and the production of saliva influences oral disease and taste, creating products to minimise the effects of low saliva production; developing new materials; and a host of techniques to improve health, minimise the negative aspects of surgical treatments and restore function and aesthetics.
